Amity

A sanctuary of green where peace reigns supreme and conflict is healed with open hearts.

Amity is one of the five original factions established to rebuild Chicago after a devastating civil war. Dedicated to peace and harmony, its members strive to eliminate conflict through empathy, forgiveness, and emotional openness. Unlike other groups that prioritize strength or honesty above all else, Amity values the collective well-being of the community, often acting as the moral conscience of the faction system.

Lore & Background

Despite their gentle nature, Amity members are not devoid of strength. They serve as the mediators and healers of society, often taking on roles that require deep emotional intelligence. However, this focus on peace makes them vulnerable to manipulation by those who seek power through fear, such as Erudite. During the faction wars, Amity suffered greatly, with many members forced into servitude or killed for their refusal to fight. Yet, even in captivity, they maintained their core identity, offering kindness to captors and preserving hope when all seemed lost.

In Their Own Story

The morning sun filters through the canopy of the community gardens, casting dappled light on the faces of children learning to share rather than compete. An elder sits on a wooden bench, gently guiding two arguing teenagers toward understanding, her hands clasped in a gesture of calm. There is no shouting here, only the soft rustle of leaves and the distant hum of bees. In this sanctuary, a wound is not an excuse for revenge but an invitation to heal together, proving that even in a broken world, peace can still grow from the soil.

Reader's Guide

Before the faction system was fully codified, the founders recognized that humanity's greatest threat was its own capacity for violence. They designed Amity specifically to counterbalance the aggression of Dauntless and the cold logic of Erudite. The initial motivation was to create a society where emotional suppression did not lead to explosive conflict. However, hidden truths revealed later in the series suggest that the faction system itself was flawed from the start. While Amity preached peace, the genetic engineering experiments by Erudite manipulated people's aptitudes, forcing many into factions they were not naturally suited for. This undermined the true spirit of Amity, as some members were placed there against their nature. Ultimately, the fall of the faction system revealed that true peace cannot be enforced by segregation. The survivors learned that harmony must come from within individuals who are free to choose their values, rather than being assigned to a group based on a single trait.
