Divergent Codexery

The Founders

Architects of a fractured peace, they built walls to keep humanity safe from itself.

The Founders were a small group of visionary leaders who emerged from the ashes of a catastrophic nuclear war that devastated the world centuries before the events of the Divergent series. Recognizing the destructive potential of human nature, they constructed a sealed facility beneath Chicago and established a rigid caste system designed to suppress conflict by segregating society into five distinct factions based on personality traits and virtues. Their ultimate goal was to create a utopia where humanity could survive without repeating the errors that led to global annihilation.

Lore & Background

However, the Founders' plan contained a fatal flaw: the existence of Divergent individuals who do not fit neatly into a single category. While the Founders likely anticipated some level of non-conformity, they underestimated how quickly the Erudite faction would discover the truth about Divergence and weaponize it against the system. The original intent was for the factions to coexist in balance, but the suppression of memory and the manipulation of genetics by later generations of Erudite leaders twisted the Founders' vision into a tool of control rather than protection.

In Their Own Story

The air inside the sealed chamber is thick with the smell of ozone and old dust. Four figures stand around a holographic projection of the city above, their faces illuminated by the cold blue light of the simulation. They are not gods, but survivors, scarred by the fire that consumed everything they once knew. One of them, an older woman with eyes that have seen too much loss, points to the map where the five sectors will be drawn. 'We cannot change human nature,' she whispers, her voice echoing in the silence, 'but we can cage it until we learn how to live again.' They place their hands on the console, sealing the fate of millions who will never know the sky before the war.

Reader's Guide

Before the books begin, the world was consumed by a nuclear conflict that rendered the surface uninhabitable for generations. The Founders, survivors of this apocalypse, retreated into an underground facility beneath what is now Chicago. They realized that without strict structure, humanity would destroy itself again through greed and aggression. To prevent this, they created the Faction system, dividing society based on five core virtues. By forcing citizens to choose a path aligned with their dominant trait, they hoped to eliminate internal conflict. The Founders also engineered a method of memory suppression to erase the painful history of the war from the public consciousness, believing that ignorance would foster peace. However, hidden truths revealed later show that the Founders' plan was not perfect. They could not account for Divergence—people who possess traits from multiple factions. While initially intended as a safeguard, this anomaly became a threat when Erudite discovered it and sought to control or eliminate Divergents to maintain their own power.
